During the final weekend of January earlier this year, a violent winter storm swept across northern Europe, causing devastation, disruption and, unfortunately, loss of life.

Storm Malik first crossed Northern Ireland and Scotland before moving across to Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, bringing wind gusts of 100 mph, destroying houses and cars, closing bridges, flooding, and of course, creating transport chaos.

As Kent Kolnes, Head of IT at Go-Ahead Nordic, recounts, “the storm caused significant damage to our infrastructure, including trees falling over lines, a power supply outage, and a tree on fire next to one station; which completely blocked the line.”

The controller on duty that day said thank goodness for Fleet Manager. With a lot of trains out at once, we had to make sure they weren’t running into danger; Fleet Manager provided a clear overview of where all the trains were, enabling him to control the traffic safely.

Go-Ahead Nordic use Signature Rail’s Fleet Manager (an on-the-day solution configured for TrainPlan) and Kent went on to recall how Go-Ahead Nordic was able to quickly and efficiently start getting services back up and running, thanks in no small part to the system.

Thanks to Fleet Manager, we were able to implement replacement bus services and get services back up and running as quickly as possible to minimize disruption and enable our passengers to continue making their journeys.

Fleet Manager integrates with TrainPlan and minimizes the impact and consequences of disruption to services on the day of operations:

  • A visual dashboard of all the data needed to take action to keep the trains running.
  • Locate and assign the right replacement trains as disruption arise.
  • Execute contingency plans in response to emergencies or weather events.
  • Communicate decisions to downstream systems in real-time.
Given that blockages are incredibly costly to manage, we have found that our Fleet Manager investment has been returned in just six months. As well as managing disruption, we also benefit from knowing when trains are scheduled for maintenance – this is vital because we can avoid the major costs associated with missing maintenance slots.
